Founded in 1421, the mosque was built by Raden Rahmat, who later became known as Sunan Ampel. He was a key Islamic missionary and one of the earliest champions of Islam on the island of Java. The mosque is believed to be the oldest mosque in East Java and among the earliest in all of Indonesia.

Location and Setting

The mosque is located in the Ampel district of Surabaya, a vibrant area historically known for its strong Islamic culture and Arab-influenced heritage. The district grew around the mosque and became a spiritual and cultural hub for Muslim communities in the region.

The area is also home to the Kampung Arab (Arab Quarter), where you can find Middle Eastern-style markets, traditional foods, and Islamic schools. The atmosphere around the mosque reflects centuries of religious tradition and cultural exchange.

Significance

  • Tomb of Sunan Ampel: Within the mosque complex lies the mausoleum of Sunan Ampel, a site of pilgrimage for Muslims across Indonesia.
  • Spiritual Importance: Many consider the mosque a place for reflection, prayer, and seeking blessings, especially before embarking on Hajj.
  • Cultural Preservation: Despite modernization, the area retains its heritage architecture, traditional trades, and communal rituals.

Architectural Style

The mosques architecture is a blend of Javanese, Arab, and Chinese influences:

  • It features limasan-style roofs, a hallmark of Javanese architecture.
  • Traditional wooden pillars support the prayer hall.
  • Arab-style calligraphy and ornamentation decorate the mosque, reflecting its multicultural roots.
